Villa Taman Damai

"Ke mana?".........

When travelling to Ubud for the first time it can be overwhelming to discover the sites, attractions and "must do" activities that will enhance your holiday in Bali's cultural and spiritual heart. Here we shall give you a few starting points in and around Ubud to get your holiday, vacation, spiritual journey or business break off to a flying start. We are continually seeking experiences that will have you embracing the culture, enjoying the natural beauty, the people, the lifestyle and Bali beyond the glitz and glamour of "western adventure".  Don't get us wrong, adventure sports are exciting and fun.......but haven't you stepped out of your own backyard to see and experience something different? Balinese culture is not found on a jet ski.......

Ubud Royal Palace (Puri Saren Ubud)

You would be hard pressed to walk past the palace  and not actually notice it. Situated on the corner  of Jl Raya Ubud & Jl Suweta it is at the heart of Ubud 'city' and the major intersection at the end of Monkey Forest road. The royal family still live here so be prepared that there is no access to all areas. The public areas are worth a visit and on particular days you can view the children learning the traditional Balinese dances such as the Legong. Outside the gates and in the streets you will find ticket sellers for the numerous shows for the tourists held in the courtyard (weather permitting) or across the street in the pavillion. The dances are well worth attending for an insight into the wonderful, vibrant and often comedic storylines. Be aware that the shows are not in the English language however the costumes are fascinating and photography/video is allowed (but be mindful of others and try not to completely blind the performers!)

Ubud Market

The market has undergone a transformation over the last few years with numerous upgrades and a more cosmopolitan look with the new exterior overlooking the corner of Jl Raya Ubud and Monkey Forest road. Personally I miss the old market that held a maze of tight fitting walkways and an uncertainty of where a stall started and finished. The markets are still worth visiting for the keen shopper, especially those who wish to hone their bartering skills. Most people visit the markets from around 11am when the main market for the tourists is beginning its day, however, if you wish to see how local people start their day head there bright and early for the chaotic scenes of the morning market.

"Perut  saya lapar"..........

When the hunger bug hits you it's great to know where you can go to find a meal that will fill that void. Regardless of your preferences there are numerous restaurants, warungs and food carts that will keep the stomach groans away. Ubud is fast becoming known for its 'awareness' of peoples dietary needs and you will find an abundance of restaurants catering to the vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and organic market. However there is still plenty of choice for people who don't follow these lifestyles. If you are concerned about the varieties of food on offer as your palate is not suited to the Indonesian preferences then fear not, there is plenty on offer. If you love the local food, westernised or traditional, then you will be well in your element!

We can start you off on your gastronomic odyssey with a few suggestions (see below). As we continue to discover the tastebud sensations in and around Ubud we will be sure to bring it to your attention, especially on our facebook page. Reviews and photographs will be found there, it's all the more reason to click "like"!  Jl. Tirta Tawar is currently expanding with plenty of warungs and restaurants opening up, but fear not, there are still some food carts if you like a more local feel. If you want to try a local health tonic (Jamu) then that scooter laden with tonics comes right past the front daily!

Waroeng Made Becik

Offering a pleasant location and relaxed ambiance in Kutuh Kaja it is very difficult to miss this wonderful local eatery on the bend just 600m or so before our villa. It has clear signs when heading north and the line of coconuts opposite are head to miss. With a simple but effective menu of Indonesian and western meals you won't go hungry from breakfast until dinner at very reasonable prices.

Warung Bintang Bali

Organic food served nearby in the village of Junjungan, a reasonably easy walk up the road or a 2 minute scooter ride. They have a great menu, nice ambience and some live music if that is your thing.
